Investment Consulting

Within this practice we provide practical investment advice to pension funds, investment management organisations and other institutional investors across a very broad spectrum of issues. On the pension side, this ranges from setting up an appropriate investment strategy to selecting investment managers to control assets on behalf of clients. On the investment management side, this could be a UK or a continental European role dealing with aspects such as design of asset management structures, products and macro research.

Many of our clients are included in the Fortune 1000 and we employ more than 200 investment consultants, serving a client base of more than 500 funds with assets of over $1 trillion. Our pragmatic investment advice is highly regarded by pension funds and institutional investors alike. The group operates globally and much of the work involves carrying out detailed research into the characteristics of different asset classes and investment management organisations, advising on overall risk and liability management and assessing prodcuts, structures and market conditions. We also use a range of consulting tools to model the outcomes of alternative investment policies and management structures.

There are two career paths available to graduates within Investment Consulting: the actuarial route and the non-actuarial route.

Broadly speaking, the practice is broken up into:

Strategy – most joiners to the strategy team will study for the Institute of Actuaries qualification as this best supports the technical complexity of modelling the performance of different investment strategies.

Manager Research – about 50% of joiner to this practice study for the Chartered Financial Analyst qualification (CFA) and 50% study towards the Institute of Actuaries qualification, depending on preference.  Essentially the practice focuses specifically on the research into and rating of different fund managers.

Client Consulting – about 50% of joiner to this practice study for the Chartered Financial Analyst qualification (CFA) and 50% study towards the Institute of Actuaries qualification, depending on preference.  The general consulting practice manages client relationships, pulling together information from the Strategy team and Manager Research and ensuring that all of our solutions are tailored to the client’s individual requirements.

We do not ask you to specify a preference on your application form, but if one or two of the areas interest you more than others, you can mention this at assessment centre stage.
