James Brett"I can work on 4 or 5 projects at any time and because my work is so project-driven, every day is different and I’m always encountering new challenges to stretch me intellectually.
"I have been encouraged to take on a lot of responsibility from day one and became involved in client meetings very quickly. You have to be able to think on your feet, think ahead and be realistic as well as manage your clients’ expectations.
"One of the first projects I worked on involved developing a new grading structure on a pan-European basis for a US multi-national. They had operations in 7 different countries but wanted a common philosophy along with a local strategy for each country. The sheer scale of the project meant that I had to use my initiative and weigh up priorities to ensure that I was as effective as possible and met strict deadlines. It was a lot of pressure but very rewarding.
"In addition to UK based projects, I also spent nearly 2 months in Abu Dhabi providing consultancy support during the restructure of local municipal government organisations. It was challenging to say the least as I had to overcome cultural issues, adapt my style of working and take a diplomatic approach while also checking that we were all thinking along the same lines and communicating clearly. My interpersonal skills have really been tested and I regularly had to come up with innovative ideas and approach problems from all angles in order to appreciate how the client might be seeing the situation. It has been a great experience and being on my own in the Middle East meant my resilience and decision-making was put to the test.
"I decided to join Watson Wyatt because the company struck me as professional and focused while also being relaxed and friendly. I haven’t been disappointed. There is support available when you need it, I’ve been pushed on to take greater steps throughout my career here and I take ownership of my projects. There is no doubt that working at Watson Wyatt constantly challenges you and that is fantastic for your development."
