Training

In addition to the central training that Benefits joiners receive, the Benefits practice runs its own training courses to give you the practice specific knowledge and skills you require.

Our individually tailored training comprises a mix of formal study towards qualification as an actuary and valuable on-the-job experience. We also place great emphasis on formal and informal mentoring. Right from the start, you’ll be part of several client teams, contributing to ongoing projects and continually building your knowledge.

Your programme will include a phased series of workshop training sessions. Each phase is designed to develop particular technical, client or management skills, and lead you towards competency in specific roles.

In addition, we'll make a significant commitment to supporting your professional study.

To help you prepare for the 15 professional examinations you will be required to sit for the actuarial qualification, you will receive both time off to study and financial assistance.

To give you a sense of the amount of study leave available to you, generally speaking those in the middle of their studies will have 40 full study days a year.  This equates to pretty much one day a week, once annual leave, public holidays and exams are factored in.  How and when you take the days though is up to you – it has to be reasonable from a business perspective but we know that you’re going to be very familiar with your study style by the time you join us so we will allow you to study in the way that suits you best

Financially, we'll make a significant contribution towards your tuition materials, examination costs and travelling expenses for attending tutorials. Our student actuaries never seem able to spend all the money we make available to them as study support. We'll also pay salary increments for each examination level passed.

The generosity of our study support is one of the reasons why our qualification rate is so much better than the national average.

Further technical workshops, external courses or seminars will be available in support of professional development throughout your career.

As you develop, you will find that the scale of the practice, combined with our global perspective, means that there are plenty of opportunities for progression.
